Exercise 2.2: Longest and shortest focal lenghts

For this exercise we have to shoot the same figure in the same spot at two distinctive focal lengths namely the long focal length shortening it to the shortest. I took the images at 85mm to 28mm with two fixed focal lengths lenses as I don’t possess a zoom at the moment.

I had to change the position of the model by turning her around in the same street as the light was not favourable and because the lines for the 28mm shot would not have been accentuated sufficiently to make the point. However, it is really clear just how the change of focal length does show quite a different perspective in relation to the lines in the foreground. It broadens them out and makes them seem more diagonal and puts a more interesting frame around the figure being photographed.

With the shot taken at 28mm it seems as if the figure is standing in the middle of an X. There is a sense of movement to the figure in the foreground as if they were coming towards the camera at the same time that the background were flying away. This perspective is quite exiting and could be used for shots were there was a need to emphasise the figure in the foreground.
